The following unit was developed for a 3rd grade class based around the novel Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. My goal is to incorporate technology into this unit to make it more enjoyable and relevant to students. The unit will include three lessons.
Lesson 1: Creating A Virtual Farm
Description: In this lesson, students will create a virtual farm in groups of four. Virtual farms will be created within a PowerPoint Presentation. Farms will be created after we have learned about different types of farms and the difficulties and challenges they face.
Lesson 2: Social Networking Through our Classroom Wiki
Description: In this lesson, students will use their social networking skills to work on our classroom wiki. In this wiki, students will take the perspective of one of the characters in the novel Charlotte's Web. Students can choose from Fern, Wilbur, Charlotte, or Templeton. Students will choose a character page on which to post quotes, thoughts, questions, or images using what they know from the novel. Students will also post to our discussion board and find interesting vocabulary with definitions to post.
Lesson 3: Alphabet Book Within a Voicethread
Description: First, students will take a look at a variety of Alphabet Books. Next, students will be asked to create a class Alphabet Book about Charlotte's Web. This Alphabet book will be created within a Voicethread. Each student will be in charge of creating his/her own page. The finished product will be a class A-Z Voicethread about the novel.
